last minute DIY costume ideas for halloween

Live TV scares the piss out of me. A fact that is painfully clear to anyone who saw my Fox 5 news segment the other day on Do-It-Yourself costume ideas. For the first minute I could not figure out where to look. Do I look at the anchor or the camera? Anchor? Camera? My eyes were flitting all over the place. Nor did I know what to do with my hands. And oh my gosh, I was so parched as soon as the cameras were rolling. I licked my lips like ten times. In the end however, the segment turned out well. I had a blast and all the kid models performed perfectly in the spotlight.

I really had to do a lot of creative thinking and research to put this segment together so I wanted to share some of the awesome DIY costume ideas I found while researching and also a few I came up with on my own.

Here are a few of my own bright ideas:

1) A Mini Steve Jobs–Dress a baby boy in a black turtle neck and jeans. Slap an apple sticker on a toy lap top and add some John Lennon glasses.

2) Baby Shower–Dress in a robe, shower cap, slippers; attach a loofa and/or rubber ducky to the robe; carry a baby doll.

3) Fantasy Football Player–A football jersey, white leggings and a wand.

Some of the DIY costumes I got from others but didn’t have time to show on the news:

1) Tube of Toothpaste: This idea was given to me by Jean of Jean Has Been Shopping. Take a long pillow case, cut the letters C-R-E-S-T out of felt and stick a lamp shade on your head.

2) Picasso’s Blue Period: Dye a bunch of maxi pads blue and stick them all over your body.

3) Box O’ Wine: Blow up a photo of the Franzia label, stick it on a box and wear it around your torso. This guy actually taped a bag of wine to the inside of his costume and could pour wine from it all day long. It was a functional, homemade costume. AND, he was the most popular guy at the party.

Now I’m trying to decide what to be. I’m thinking either:

1) Katy Perry from SNL–All I’ll need is a black wig in pig tails, nerdy glasses and a LOW cut Elmo tee. Oh, some balloons in my bra (which I have plenty of thanks to the Jelly Bean costume).

2) Sue Sylvester from GLEE–All I’ll need is an Addidas track suit, a megaphone and a Slurpee cup (or a box of Cheerios).

I might just dress up in a leotard and carry my shake weight around all night.

What about you? What are you gonna be for Halloween this year?

How wonderful! Your segment was perfect, you did such a good job! These costumes are really DIY and fun! My favorite costume was the ‘chick magnet.’ I think he may really wear that costume.

You are experiencing stardom, right now! It is just a matter of time until you are the Rachel Ray (this is a compliment) of mommy bloggers. I can say I knew you when. Congratulations!

Enjoyed the hell out of this segment!
You looked like a natural in front of the camera. I didn’t see the eyes flitting, the licking of the lips, none of it.
Hilarious costumes and great ideas, Mary. I love how the wine box dude could actually pour wine! Brilliant!
I ended up loaning my costume to a dental hygienist. Hope it doesn’t make her job too cumbersome.

I was ridiculously nervous when we first started but then when the camera turned away from me and onto the kids I was able to relax a bit. Thanks again for the toothpaste idea!
