Two years ago, before signing up with Team in Training to run the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco, I had never run more than four miles at one time. The overall experience for me, from beginning to end, was life changing. I set and achieved a personal goal that was beyond my wildest imagination, I met countless new and wonderful people, I pushed myself physically more than I ever thought I would, and most importantly I helped raise a lot of money to save people’s lives (and the Tiffany & Co. necklace presented to me at the finish line by firefighters in tuxedoes didn’t hurt either). It was a magical experience for me.
And now, two years later, I sit in front of my computer, nervous and excited about filling out the registration form for yet another half marathon, this time, right here in San Diego. Last year my husband got a job as Senior Video Producer at The Competitor Group, which owns the Rock N’ Roll Marathon and my sister got a job at Team In Training. So I’m keeping it in the family and training with TNT for the San Diego Rock N’ Roll Marathon in June.
Coincidentally, or maybe not, the race will take place one day before the 10th anniversary of my dad’s death from cancer. I have a ball in my throat just typing those words, so I can only imagine what an emotional race it will be for me.
I must admit that the training takes a lot of energy and dedication, and since I am already being pulled in so many directions in my life, this seems a little daunting to take on at the moment. And for some reason, I am just as nervous, if not more, as I was the first time around. But I know that once I start, I will get into the groove and be able to once again achieve this goal.
I’ve heard the San Diego Rock N’ Roll Marathon is one of the best in the world to participate in, and this year the half marathon shares the same finish line as the full marathon so that is a definite plus. Anyone else out there interested in running with me? (I’m slow as molasses, by the way!)
If you happen to be on the fence about whether or not to run a half or a full marathon, I say, “Just Do It!” There is nothing to lose and everything to gain (Not sure when I became Tony Robbins, but just go with it).
Also, I HIGHLY recommend training with Team In Training. HIGHLY. Training with TNT ensures the following things: 1) You will have fun, 2) You will wake up on race morning feeling completely trained, prepared and confident 3) You will be inspired by something bigger than yourself.
I hope you’ll consider running with me. If you’re one of my bloggy friends from a different city, this would be a fun way for us to meet IRL!
Training with TNT starts this Saturday so you’re not too late! Watch the video below for more information or go to www.teamintraining.org. If you’re an avid runner already and can by pass the training, go straight to the Competitor website to sign up (and get $30.oo off your bib if you sign up before January 31st).
Who’s in? You will not regret it.
