dino tracking is not just for boys

Redbox movie rentals Dino Dan

The other day, my two daughters who are four and “five-and-three-quarters,” began a conversation about Yoda and Dark Vader. “It’s Darth not Dark,” insisted the four year old. I chimed in, validating that it is in fact Darth, not Dark, and then asked how they suddenly knew so much about STAR WARS.

Unbeknownst to me, my husband has been recounting all of the STAR WARS movies as their bedtime stories. Though they might be a little young to actually see all of those films right now, I was thrilled to know they are getting exposure to such pop culture classics and want to play pretend Stormtroopers around the house. It had never occurred to me that they would find fun in those types of sci-fi storylines.

Then, this week, as part of a promotion with the movie rental company, Redbox, I rented the Dino Dan DVD collection. Quite honestly, if it were not for this promotion I probably never would have selected this DVD out for my kids, not because I have anything against dinosaurs (I save my prejudices and aversions for unicorns), but more so because, again, it would never have occurred to me that they would like it. Much to my surprise they LOVED it and have now been dino tracking, all week, in our living room, the library and the gymnasium.

All this dino tracking and Dark/Darth Vader talk makes me realize that I have been remiss in my parenting. Up until now, the shows I have been selecting for the kids have been either princess and/or jazz hand related (except for Doc McStuffins which is our new fave show!). Tsk tsk on me for falling into the “pink is for girls and blue is for boys” baloney. I’ve been doing them a disservice by not opening their eyes to other things like science and sci-fi related shows. Thank you Dino Dan and Dark/Darth Vader for opening my eyes, and a whole new world for my kids. Now, their imaginations can go where they haven’t gone before.
