a family tradition on thanksgiving in memory of a giving soul

One of our favorite family traditions this time of year, aside from our annual trip to Disneyland, is the O’side Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving morning. Not only is it a fun, picturesque way to get exercise before shoveling tractor-sized amounts of food into our mouths, but it is also a way for us to help memorialize a family friend, Austin Bice, who died nearly two years ago while studying abroad in Spain. His death was an unspeakable tragedy, as he was only 22 years old, and it is still a very raw, gaping wound for his parents and close family and friends.

On Thanksgiving morning, my husband, kids, sister, nieces and I, along with hundreds of Austin’s family and friends, will be run/walking with heavy hearts, carrying on a tradition that Austin and his parents, Pam & Larry, started years ago, with love and light.

If you want to sign up for the race and be a part of  Team Austin Bice, thereby helping to raise money for the Austin Bice Memorial Scholarship Fund, just go to the race website and be sure to click the appropriate scroll down tabs for Team Austin Bice and his scholarship fund. Every year his family raises money for a scholarship fund to send one lucky, qualified, star student to San Diego State University, where Austin was a student at the time of his death. This Turkey Trot is one of the ways money is raised in his memory.

We’d love to see you out there on Turkey Day.
