Last Thursday I spent the 20th anniversary of my 21st birthday staying up WAY too late on a school night, at a trendy nightclub, drinking lemon drop shots and listening to the top hip hop artist on the pop charts, Macklemore of Thrift Shop fame.
Here’s how it all went down.
On December 2nd, I Shazaamed a bumpin’ song on the radio, only to find out that it was sung by no one I had never heard of . . . Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. I immediately downloaded it and played it repeatedly, even before the radio DJ’s caught on to its greatness.
On February 13th, I found out the Macklemore was white, via this video (warning this is NOT the clean edited version so it is NOT safe for work or kids).
Then, on February 27th, I saw this nifty little “Tiny Desk Concert Series” featuring Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, thanks to a friend’s Facebook posting.
I watched it three times in a row, re-shared it on Facebook, and said to myself, I need to see them perform this live.
Then, THE NEXT DAY, a friend of mine sent me a text of this poster with the caption, “want to go.”
Inner Monologue: UM, HELL YES! Not only is March 21st my birthday, but I have been obsessing over this guy for weeks now. Sign me up!
The end of this story is much better than my JT commercial audition story because I DID get to see Macklemore and Ryan Lewis perform, in a small venue, ON my birthday, BOOM!
I’m sure you have heard Thrift Shop but they also have some other great songs, my favorite of which is Can’t Hold Us. So watch the NPR video above and make it to the third song so you can hear it.
Needless to say I had bang-up birthday and I’m still paying for it now.
