easy diy halloween costumes for kids under $30

Here it is, folks . . . Halloweek (I think I just made that up! I’m trade marking it, stat!) and it’s time for some last minute, DIY Halloween costume ideas. For the past few years, I’ve hosted a mini-fashion show on Fox 5 San Diego with some fun, easy, DIY costume ideas so here are some of the highlights from Tuesday’s segment.

DIY Vanellope from Wreck it Ralph

DIY Wreck it ralph vanellope costumeI’ve talked on this site ad nausuem about this costume, probably because I’m still in shock that I pulled it off. But seriously, this is a fun one, especially if you or your daughter already have black hair and don’t have to deal with a wig. Check out the tutorials on how to make Vanellope’s wig and how to make the over-sized lollipop.

DIY Agnes from Despicable Me

This costume is from the uber-talented Tonya Staab, who amazes me nearly everyday with her craftiness. Check out her site for DIY everything.

Tonya is also showing off her LEGO Lord Vampyre costume, so don’t miss it!

Side note: If you do any LEGO theme costume and you live in So Cal, I certainly hope you go to LEGOLAND California’s Halloween celebration, Brick or Treat, and enter into their costume contest!

DIY Black Cat

Though I would NEVER be caught dead in a cat costume, I know a lot of little kids would love to be a cute black cat (and adults too). Check out this EASY DIY tutorial via Adventures in Wunderland on how to create this cute black tutu and black cat costume.

Rachel from Adventures in Wunderland is also making a DIY LEGO Knight and an Ariel costume that will be shown off on Fox 5 as well!

DIY “What Did Fox Say?” Fox

I suspect this will be the most popular costume this year, for both kids and adults. It’s the fox from this INCREDIBLE YouTube viral video by Ylvis (if you haven’t watched it, please do).

Just need to get fox ears and a tail and a little make-up. This family actually already had the “What does the fox say?” tee-shirt, but you could easily make your own with iron-on letters.

DIY Jellyfish

From the same talented mom of the fox costume, comes this incredible DIY Jellyfish.

Homemade costumes under $30 dollars

Her kiddos won the Brick or Treat costume contest last year with these bad boys. Marcy doesn’t have a blog, so here is a quick summation of how she made these:

The top is built around a sombrero, spray painted white, with LED lights, bubble wrap, and shower poof netting inside.  The tentacles are a combination of bubble wrap, shower poof netting, and ribbon.  It took around 5 hours total to make two of them with a ton of hot glue and cost less than $30 in supplies. Boom!

DIY Cupcake

This tasty gem of a costume came to me via Jillian of MommyTesters.com. This thing is made of 3 different kinds of paper: craft paper, crepe paper, and yes, TOILET paper –yum!?

DIY Rainbow

The most elaborate of these costumes, and probably not a good last-minute idea since Rory of Chocolate Hair Vanilla Care has been working on this for months, is this No-Sew Rainbow, complete with pot of gold boots, and a raincloud that makes noise and lights up. Dude!

Check out Rory’s blog for details on how she made this incredible rainbow costume. She did it all for under $30.00. I am in awe of this woman every year!

That’s all for this year. What are some of your favorite last minute, DIY costume ideas?
