Making my own DIY Vanellope Von Schweetz costume was not an easy undertaking, at least not for me, the least crafty mom on the block. Halfway through, I felt WAY in over my head and wanted to chuck the wig stand right through the window as I was trying to make the hair clips. But, I persisted and am happy that I did. Check it out, it turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself.
If you have no idea who Vanellope is, she is the adorable little girl in Wreck it Ralph. If you haven’t seen that movie, then stop what you are doing and check it out, because it’s adorable!
I had to buy several little things to put this costume together, but nothing was very expensive and the only things that took some craftiness were the wig, the lollipop and the tights. Today I am covering the hair so come back later this week for more on the rest of the costume.
VANELLOPE — THE HAIR:
Since Lexi’s hair is light brown and pretty short I decided to go with a wig. The wig was tricky because the kid’s sized wigs that I found were not well made and looked weird when they were put in a ponytail, so I went with an adult wig from Party City.
To assemble the hair you will need:
- Wig, wig cap, black bobby pins & wig stand (or full head of black awesome hair and if your kiddo has that already, lucky you!)
- Black hair clips
- Colorful hair clips
- Colorful buttons or other decorative items
- Hot glue gun
- Red pipe cleaners
- Red licorice
For the colorful hair décor, I used an assortment of colorful mini-claw clips that I found at Target for a few bucks and some decorative buttons and mini candy Christmas ornaments that I found at Michael’s in the Holiday section (yes, Xmas stuff is out already!) I used a glue gun to attach the ornaments to the hair clips. WARNING: They do not so Super Glue might have been better?
Check out this video to see how we assembled everything.
Stay tuned, in the next week I will do a post and vlog about how we made Vanellope’s over-sized lollipop.
