86th academy awards best dresses and best speeches

I watch the Oscars every year, religiously, and this is the first year in a long time that I remember loving it all the way through.

First off, Ellen DeGeneres hit it out of the park with her stylized suits, her #selfies (or which I now dubbing #groupies because they contain more than one person), pizza ordering and her Glenda the Good Witch getup. The world is simply a better place because she is in it. And so are the Oscars.

White tux jackets and short pixie haircuts were in, anything related to Wolf of Wall Street was out (it didn’t win one single award, which is a bummer because I loved that film!). Gravity came out of nowhere for me because I didn’t hear from one single person that it was a must see and I clearly need to rent 12 Years a Slave, ASAP?

The only thing missing from the night was a musical recap/spoof of all the numbers, but who needs that when you have Pharrell, Bono, Idina, P!nk and Bette bringing the house down with their incomparable talent. Whoa, the musical numbers tonight were beyond stellar and had me in tears more than once (shocker!).

Speaking of Bette, has she ever looked better than she did last night?

For best dressed I call Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Hudson and Charlize Theron.

86th Academy Awards best dressed

STUNNING!

I didn’t even pay attention to the worst dressed, though I was not a fan of Cate Blanchett’s dress. Not even a little bit.

All of the speeches were thoughtful and thought-provoking without being cheesy or over-done. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the show.

2014 Oscars recap plus best dressed and best speeches

“It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s.”

- Lupita Nyong’o, Best Supporting Actress from 12 Years a Slave

“Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live . . . I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery and to the 21 million people who still suffer slaver today.”

- Steve McQueen, Best Director, 12 Years a Slave

“If you win tonight, I think we should bring you the Oscar.”

– Ellen DeGeneres to Jennifer Lawrence in regards to the fact that fell last year AND this year.

“It’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates.”
– Matthew McConnaughey, Best Actor, Dallas Buyers Club

“You showed us something in that film that I have not seen in a very, very long time.”

Ellen DeGeneres to Jonah Hill in regards to the fact that he showed his private parts in Wolf of Wall Street.

“This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS, and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love. Tonight, I stand here in front of the world with you and for you. “

-Jared Leto, Best Supporting Actor from Dallas Buyers Club

“Sit down, you’re too old to be standing.”

-Cate Blanchett to the audience after winning Best Actress, Blue Jasmine

Well done everyone, well done! Can’t wait ’til next year!

I’m so happy you wrote all of these down because I was kicking myself afterwards for not doing so. Loved the show and will definitely be tuning in next year if Ellen is hosting.

I’m kicking myself because I missed the show! First time EVER! I don’t know what was wrong with me to make me forget! I’m blaming it on “The Conference Hangover” after spending the weekend at WGS with such amazing and fabulous women, all of whom deserve their own Oscars! Thanks for giving me snippets of highlights!
