For years I’ve been hearing about the Blue Man Group phenomenon and finally, last night, I got to experience it for myself. My girls and I received some comp tickets to the show at the San Diego Civic Theater, and it’s only playing only through this Sunday. We laughed our way through the entire show and have not stopped asking questions and thinking about it since leaving the theater.
Before the Blue Men even come on stage, the show begins with a bit of clever audience interaction which gets the crowd involved and cracking up from the get-go.
Then the percussion begins and for an hour and forty minutes the audience gets to play along and experience a unique, theatrical social experiment with vibrant colors and drum beats, all the while wondering “how in the heck are they doing that?”
Since we left the theater my girls have been shaking their booties, thanks to the last song, and asking questions of which I can’t even answer.
The premise is that people can communicate and get along, even if they don’t actually speak the same language. Music, rhythm, facial expressions, body language and humor can tell a story and can bond any cross-section of people.
Before seeing the show here’s what you need to know:
- There is NO dialogue or singing whatsoever (except from the audience).
- It’s one hour and forty minutes straight through so pee before you sit.
- It is for all ages. My 6 & 8 year old were thoroughly entertained and loved every minute of it, as did the blue hairs that were sitting in front of me.
- Don’t come in late or they might just embarrass you the heck out of ya
It is definitely an experience you should have at least once in your life. Some people go back time and time again.
Our date for the evening was Nicole of Red Lotus Mama and her daughter, D. Check out Nicole’s interview with one of the Blue Men to read about the background of the show and to learn a bit about how they get into character.
And here is a video of our kids (and I make a cameo) talking about what they loved about the show:
