When I am asked to answer the question, “What is one thing people don’t know about you?”, I have a few go-to answers: 1) I know nearly every lyric to Ice Cube’s Predator CD, 2) I have a gold tooth 3) I can’t ride a bike (well I finally learned a few years ago but I’m not very good at it) 4) I have an unusual phobia of unicorns and 5) I may (or may not) have won a chunk o’ change on a singing game show a few years back.

But since I have blogged about ALL of those things over the past few years, I can’t very well claim them to be things that no one knows about me. So when the good lookin’ people of GoDaddy.com asked me to name a little known fact about myself, I was stumped.

Finally I came up with a fact that not many people know about me, and the people who do know, tend to forget.

I don’t have my ears pierced.

Sometimes it feels like I’m one of only two adult women in this whole country who don’t have our ears pierced. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, there are probably closer to ten or eleven of us.

It’s not that I haven’t tried to have them pierced. When I was a teen, I tried three different times, but each time they got infected and I was too wimpy to deal with the blood, puss and pain, so I let them close up. Now there is so much scar tissue in there from the three failed attempts that I don’t think it’s even possible to get a needle through there.

So, for the past twenty-seven years I have either gone sans earrings or worn clip-on earrings, which has been somewhat of a pain, because:

a) They hurt.

b) It’s hard to find cute clip-ons (thank God for Nordstrom who came out with these silver and gold hoops last year that actually look like real earrings).

c) Clip-ons don’t tend to stay on so I have lost countless earrings over the years.

d) Friends and family tend to forget that I don’t have pierced ears so every once in awhile I get a pair of real earrings that make me swoon. Like these:

Bonus information: I don’t have any tattoos either, which isn’t as shocking as the no piercings thing, but just proves that I’m a wimp. Or maybe I just think I’m the pristine Anastasia Steele.

Since this post was sponsored by Go Daddy, how about an interesting non sequitur about the genius marketing wizards who are mack daddies at url stuff (for lack of understanding all that they do) and continue to bring all the boys to they yard with their commercials? Did you know Go Daddy actively employs and promotes corporate women? The chief human resources officer, VP of PR and VP of marketing are all women, as are several high-ranking individuals in the legal department.

I wonder how many of those corporate women don’t have pierced ears?

There’s even more you don’t know about Go Daddy, including all the tools they have for bloggers! Check out www.godaddy.com to learn more!

If you reply to this thread, you’ll be entered to win 3 years Unlimited 4GH Hosting for free from Go Daddy. Pretty exciting stuff if you’re thinking about launching a new website (just like I did!).

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Go Daddy. The opinions and text are all mine.

I’m thrilled to announce that the DeadDadsClub website is now up and running. While working on my book, I realized that I didn’t want to virtual meeting of the club to end, so I came up with the idea to launch a website where people can continue to commiserate and heal through the written word.

As research has shown, writing can be a powerful tool during the healing process, so not only do I encourage people to come to the site to read stories from other women, but I also hope that this site will inspire people to write down their own stories, whether they share them with the world or not.

I hope you’ll stop by and help spread the word. As always, I appreciate your support in this labor of love.

Also, I want to direct you to a site called, Letters for Lucas. I met Tonya at at Bloggy Boot Camp last year and become close virtual friends with each other ever since. Unfortunately, we both share the common bond of having lost our dads (she actually lost both her parents and has quite the story to tell). She asked me to be a part of her “Letters for You” series in which bloggers write a letter to someone. In honor of the Dead Dads Club launch, I decided to write a letter to my dad, catching him up on all that he’s missed in past eleven years. I am thankful for the opportunity to, yet again, write about my dad. I hope you’ll pop on over to her site and read my guest post.

My Forty Fog and Fifty Shades of Grey are not the only reasons for my reprehensible neglect of my blog lately. Kids and work have been factors too. Oh, and planning/packing for my upcoming family vacation to Hawaii (a lot goes into packing for a family vacay!).

But on top of all that, a major thing taking up my time is my upcoming dance recital.

Yes, dear readers of the Mama Mary Show, I am going to be dancing in my kids’ dance recital. I’m not doing their dance with them. I’m dancing to a rather racy Kelly Rowland song that I learned in my adult hip hop class.

For the past few months I have wavered back and forth as to whether or not to do this performance. At first I hemmed and hawed about being one of the only adults in the show since most of my fellow mom dancers have stopped taking the class. Finally I convinced one other mom to do it with me so that excuse went out the window.

Then I wondered if was going to embarrass my kids. When I asked them about it, they said, “Mom, you have to do it.” So once they gave me the official thumbs up, I realized it’s actually a really fun thing for the three of us to share together.

Then I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to learn and adequately perform the dance because the first night my instructor taught it in class, I was completely lost. COMPLETELY LOST. It was as if all of my rhythm left me along with my 30′s and I had gained two left feet. I honestly almost hung up my dancing shoes forever that night. But I didn’t want to look like a quitter to my kids, so instead of giving up on it, I went to the gym every day for a week and in lieu of doing cardio machines, I snuck into the Group X class studio and practiced til I got it.

Then last week my husband said (in the clueless ways that men say<del> stupid shit</del> stuff), “Why are you making such a big deal of this little recital?’

I know he didn’t intentionally mean to offend me or minimize what I was doing, but he did (stay tuned for my post on married couples, communication and apologies coming up next week), so then, once again, I considered backing out of the show.

After considering all of those reasons and excuses to back out, it was as if I was being dared by the universe to do this recital. Which, of course, made me even more determined to do it.

So now I say, just try and tell me not to. Bring. It. On.

It’s been 10 years since I’ve been on stage and 20 years since I’ve danced on stage so why the hell not seize this opportunity? No, it’s not So You Think You Can Dance, or a Justin Timberlake video, or even the Ellen DeGeneres stage, but if I get joy out of it, then dammit, I’m going to be in a kids’ recital.

Of course I’ll post a video of the dance but until wish me luck, or rather, “Break a Leg.”

****

OH, and ONE MORE THING that’s been on my mind lately is the launch of the DeadDadsClub website I’ve been working on for over a year. It is FINALLY ready and will be going live tomorrow (fingers crossed). Putting this site out for the world is almost more intimidating than dancing in my kids’ recital but I am excited to continue the virtual meeting of the Club that started with my book.

In this past, post-less week, I have finally begun to realize that, instead of trying to figure out who I am, where I’m going and what my purpose is, which I’ve been doing since my recent birthday milestone, what I really need to do is just be proud of who I am, appreciative of where I’ve been and faithful in where I’m going. And most of all, realize and accept that my kiddos are my focus right now. I am where I am meant to be.

This Mother’s Day I will be grateful for the beauty and the blessings that are my children and I will revel in the fact the I Am Mom Enough.

I will also be sending special prayers out to those who don’t have mothers, like my mom who lost her mom when she was 21, and my nieces who lost their mom (my sister) six years ago this week. I will also be thinking of the moms who have lost children like our family friend who lost her son Austin last year, and for Anna of An Inch of Gray, who will both be inching their way, painstakingly, through the day.

Motherhood is precious. It is the hardest job in the world and should not be taken lightly, taken for granted, or judged. I raise my glass to my fellow mothers, young and old. You are brave, you are bold and you are enough.

For some feel-good Mother’s Day treats . . .

Read this poem by Billy Collins called The Lanyard, watch this video of Joshua Ledet of American Idol singing “It’s a Man’s World” as it’s dedication to his mama, and watch this tear-inducing commercial by P & G. Seriously, if you don’t at least tear up at this . . .

I have watched nearly every episode of American Idol since the first season eleven years ago. Many times I have placed friendly wagers on the outcome, but have never been able to accurately nail down the Top 4, until now. Finally, the Top 4 were revealed and guess who nailed them eight weeks ago with wickedly spot-on predictions?

Yep, that’s right. ME!

This was the image I posted on March 8,with thirteen contestants still left in the competition:

Sure enough, these four contestants are the last four standing.

BOOM!

Now if I had to pick the order in which they go home from here this is what I would say, not based on their talent but based on what I think America will vote.

4. Hollie Cavanagh

3. Jessica Sanchez

2. Phillip Phillips

1. Joshua Ledet – If all is right with the world, Joshua Ledet will be the next American Idol. I have heard some AI fans say that they don’t connect with him, but he wows me every week. I truly have not seen anything like him before.

If it’s not Joshua, then I hope it’s Phillip. And if it’s one of the girls, then I don’t really care because I’ll be crying.

Here’s another stellar performance by Joshua from a few weeks ago singing Fantasia’s Believe. His nickname is Mantasia so this is appropriate.

1990. The year I became a UCSB Gaucho, the year West and East Berlin united, the year throwing clay saw a boom thanks to Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore and the year USC football star #55, Junior Seau, was drafted by the Chargers, changing the face of football in San Diego and across the country, forever.

Any die hard Charger Fan can tell you that being a die hard Charger fan is not easy. But there was something about Junior Seau that made it easier. It was the way he left everything he had on the football field that gave us hope for a W, each and every Sunday. He believed, so we believed. With fire in his belly, he lit up the field, his teammates and the fans. He led his team to victories and through defeats, with unparalleled intensity and most importantly, his head held high. His power, strength, and speed on the field were only part of the equation. It was his heart and determination that made him stand out above the rest and earned him a spot in all of our hearts.

I never had the opportunity to meet Junior Seau in person, though I still feel like I knew him, just like every native San Diegan feels like they knew him. I have countless memories of the number 55, from tailgaiting at the Q in a 55 jersey, screaming “Say Owwww” from the stands, and drinking shots of Goldschlager at his restaurant, Seau’s, during Monday Night Football.

My heart broke with the news of his suicide. It broke for his mom who lost her son, his kids who lost their dad, the NFL who lost a comrade, San Diegans who lost a hero and the game of football that lost a legend. My heart also breaks thinking about the darkness and desolation he must have felt in order to take his own life.

Sending love, light and peace to his family and friends as they make their way through the journey of grief.

RIP Junior. Thank you for sharing your talents, gifts and incomparable spirit with us.

After my much needed, relaxing massage at the La Costa Resort and Spa this past Sunday, my masseuse mentioned that I should sit in the steam room for a few minutes to help loosen and clear up some of the residual gunk in my chest and head from my lingering cold (yes, another cold!).

Awesome idea! I thought to myself as I sauntered through the lush garden courtyard in my white plush robe.

Upon finding the steam room, I stopped just outside the fogged up glass door, realizing that I was not wearing a bathing suit under my robe. Hmmm. Typically at these public spas, I am on the modest side. I do not walk around Full Monty, even though, by spa protocol, free-balling it is deemed perfectly acceptable. I, however, am not comfortable doing so. Hence, my dilemma at the steam room door.

My brain being a bit gooey from the massage was not my ally in that moment as the option of grabbing a towel to wrap up with did not cross my mind. Instead I decided, Screw it, I’m going in naked. There’s probably no one in there and if there are people in there, I’ll never see them again. Plus, people do it all the time, and who cares anyway? I am 40-year-old-woman-hear-me-roar-and-see-me-naked. Boom!

I hung my robe up one the hook and slowly opened the door to the steam room. Overwhelmed by the dense, hot wave of steam, I had to stop for a moment to get my bearings (or should I say barings?). Finally, the steam parted enough to reveal eight to ten female figures, all in bathing suits. My momentary bravery turned to awkward discomfort.

I stood there, buck naked, like out of a bad dream where I was late for a midterm and couldn’t find my clothes, trying to process what to do. I finally glimpsed a small opening of mahogany bench, a scalding hot mahogany bench, but then realized I would probably scar myself for life if I tried to sit down directly on it.

I noticed a woman, a bathing-suited woman, sitting on a towel. Ding, ding, ding!

I made an immediate about-face, exited the steam room, found myself a towel, like I should’ve done originally, wrapped up, made my way back into the steam room and went to the empty spot I had spied earlier amidst the others.

Ahhh! One deep-cleansing breath in. Mortification over. Time to relax. And . . .

“Mary Godwin?” I heard from the hazy figure sitting next to me.

Oh my god! Someone knows me in here? Well now they REALLY know me, whoever it is. Terrified at whom I might find on the other side of the mist, I waited for it to part.

After a few seconds, I could finally see that it was the owner of the dance studio where my daughters and I take dance.

OH HI! I exclaimed, probably a little over-zealously trying to hide my embarrassment from being bare-assed just a few minutes prior.

We chatted a little and I died a little.

Figuring she was not alone, I looked around her and sure enough, there were a few other teachers from the studio with her also. Awesome!

“Hi Gals!” I said, again, way too cheerfully.

I replayed the previous four minutes in mind and died again.

I could not believe I had just revealed myself to a room full of unsuspecting women, some of whom I know. I mean, what are the chances of me running into women I know in the steam room on the one day I decide to brave the bare beave? Oh, the horror!

In retrospect, I am just thankful that I ultimately grabbed a towel to cover up because had I sat down next to her fully naked, well I just don’t think I could’ve recovered from that.

I’ve gone an entire week without posting boo on my site, which hasn’t happened since I started blogging over three years ago. There are two things to blame for the unprecedented lapse.

The first is something I am calling The Forty Fog. It feels a little like this picture I took at the park the other day:

Ever since turning forty a few weeks ago I have been in sort of a haze, not quite like a depression but certainly a cloudy relative. In fact, I’ve got one hand in my pocket and the other one texting my therapist. Mainly the fog consists of thick, head-trippiness , also known as introspection, centered around words like purpose, priorities and mortality. I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting, reassessing, realigning.

I’ve also been doing a lot of self-indulgent activities, like relaxing on the couch, watching performance shows like Idol, The Voice, Smash and GLEE (please watch this is you missed the Whitney episode), and reading books, which I haven’t done in forever. Which brings me to the second (real) reason I haven’t posted in a week:

Fifty Shades of Grey:

Last week I heard of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy from three different sources, so this past Saturday I finally gave into curiosity and downloaded the first one onto my iPad.

I passed on downloading the bundle of three, you know, just in case I didn’t like the first one. Dumb mistake. Of course I immediately had to purchase the second, which I’m in the middle of now, and the third will not be far behind, I am certain of that.

In case you haven’t heard of this Fifty Shades of Effed Up phenomenon yet, basically it’s poorly written erotica, also being called mommy porn, smut or “clit lit.” My friend Beth reviewed the steamy trilogy, saying accurately that though they are poorly written, there is something about them that is undeniably delicious. So delicious that I’ve haven’t published a blog post in a week.

So, this weekend, I plan on seeing my shrink, enjoying a weekend away at La Costa Spa that we won, and also hopefully finishing this trilogy so I can get back to my regularly scheduled programming here on The Mama Mary Show, sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, go buy the Fifty Shades of Grey bundle on iBooks, or Kindle or at Barnes and Noble (don’t waste time by buying them separately, you won’t read just one, trust me).

Please note: Fifty Shades of Grey is not for the faint at heart. S & M, flogging and butt plugs are involved. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

One of my first memories of learning what it means to be green was circa 1983. My grade school hosted a Paper and Can Drive that was a competition between the grades to see which class could bring in the most newspapers and aluminum cans. I hadn’t paid much attention to the bulletins about this Paper and Can Drive, and apparently neither did my mother because neither of us remembered to bring in any papers or cans on the designated drive day.

I was pretty embarrassed and distraught at being the only kid to show up empty handed and even more distraught when our class didn’t win the drive. I vividly remember being green with envy watching the winning class get their pizza and ice cream party.

That envious green propelled me into being environmentally green from then on and I began to save every Tab soda can and every Union-Tribune that came into our home, which was a lot, on both counts.Though my school stopped doing those recycling drives, I maintained my zest for recycling and have carried it into my adulthood. I am still secretly hoping to get that pizza and ice cream party someday.

A few of my good “green” habits include:

Using our gajillion reusable bags on our many Trader Joes and Target runs.

Reusing gift bags year after year instead of buying boat loads of wrapping paper.

Sticking food in the oven while it is pre-heating, rather than waiting ‘til it gets to the full temp.

Washing nearly every load of clothes in cold.

Using Seventh Generation cleaning products.

Getting as many bills and receipts as I can online rather than in the mail.

Singing “Let It Grow” from Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax soundtrack at the top of our lungs to help spread the word of the Lorax though song.

Although I do demonstrate some good green practices, I also have a few bad anti-green habits I need to break, like:

Letting the water run while brushing my teeth or washing my hands – My kids catch me doing this all the time and are the first ones to remind me.

Leaving lights on around the house.

Running the AC during the summer instead of opening the windows.

In my review of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax over on TodaysMama a few months ago, I asked readers to tell me ways in which they were environmentally friendly. Most of the actions were things I have heard of and do in my own life, but there were a few “Over-the-Top Good Green Habits” that are just out of my league:

Capturing and saving the cold shower water that typically gets wasted while waiting for it to turn hot. My friend Laura and her husband siphon the bath water out the window to water the grass in their back yard. Now that deserves a medal I’m thinkin’.

Using cloth diapers – This one didn’t even cross my mind as a possibility when my kiddos were young. Big, huge kudos to moms who can manage with cloth or eco-friendly diapers.

Growing fruit & veggie gardens – If I didn’t have a black thumb I would consider this as an option, but I do so I won’t.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Seventh Generation and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax have joined forces to inspire families to conserve the earth’s resources with conscious consumption.

In my quest for just the perfect location to hold my co-40th birthday party I searched the streets of San Diego high and low. I wanted a hip place, because you know, age is just a number and I’m still as hip as I wanna be, near a hotel, with good food and strong drinks. I knew I had hit the jackpot when I found Analog Bar in the Gaslamp. Not only is their slogan “Good Food, Strong Drinks,” but they also consider themselves a throwback to two of my favorite bars from my twenties, The Lamplighter and Nunus. It was meant to be.

The party went off without a hitch and was a perfect way to ring in the next decade of my life. If you’re looking for a place to throw your next big soiree here are:

1. Good Food, Strong Drinks: This is their tagline and they aren’t foolin’. From their signature Lobster Corn Dogs to the simple hummus + pita, everything on their menu is capital-D-delish. We served beef sliders and brie + blue grilled cheese sandwiches to rave reviews from my party guests. Our signature cocktail was a Blood Orange Lemon Drop which was also delish, though may have been the reason that my eyes were the color of blood orange the next morning.

2. Good Looking Staff: The servers are all young, hip and easy on the eyes. Come on, a little eye candy can only help your party.

3. Good Vibes: I would say Analog has one of the best “vibes” of any bar/hangout downtown. It’s cool without being a scene (it becomes more like a “club” after 11 but we left before that). The wall décor, consisting of actual cassette tapes and throwback album covers, gives me a warm and cozy feeling like snuggling up next to my favorite 80’s memorabilia.

4. Good Tunes: Music can make or break a party and the one-of-a-kind live band karaoke played by the The Sidekicks via Inner Voyage Music was a huge hit. The Sidekicks is a fun cover band playing everything from Sweet Child of Mine to It’s Tricky. They set up an iPad with lyrics for each song so party guests can sing along. It takes karaoke to a whole new level. It’s unique, fun and I promise you’ve never seen anything like it.

5. Good Times: From the TV screens where you can show movies, video games, photo montages or even live Twitter feeds, to the vintage Ms. Pac Man arcade game, Analog has something fun for everyone!

In case you’re not yet convinced of the goodness that is Analog, here’s a video of my husband singing his own version of It’s Tricky with the live band.
